Environmental Protection and Controls

Superior Landfill and Recycling Center uses collection and monitoring systems to protect the environment including a time-tested Subtitle D compost synthetic liner system.  The ground monitoring wells around the site are sampled and analyzed by trained monitoring technicians on a semi-annual basis.  The water quality data is evaluated by third party personnel and submitted to GA EPD on a semi-annual basis.

A collection and extraction system for the wastewater is placed above the primary liner system. All wastewater is directed to collection sumps and discharged to a holding tank.  From the holding tank it is trucked off-site to the City of Savannah waste water treatment plant.

The landfill operates a system to control methane gas, which is formed by the decomposition of solid waste. Collection wells have been installed to remove the gas. Through its partnership with Georgia Power, the Superior Landfill and Recycling Center uses the gas it collects as a renewable energy resource for the Savannah, Georgia area.

GA Environmental Protection Division inspects the landfill and its operating standards on a regular basis.  These unannounced inspections include a thorough review of facility operations and record-keeping.  In addition, all Solid Waste Inspections, representatives from Air Quality, and Water Quality, conduct unannounced inspections.

The Superior Landfill and Recycling Center has an approved waste-screening program to identify and restrict the disposal of unauthorized materials.  Unauthorized wastes may include hazardous wastes, liquid wastes and radioactive wastes. Employees are trained in the proper observation, identification and handling of waste.

The acceptance of residual waste is a unique service provided for commercial and industrial customers.  Each commercial and industrial waste is identified and profiled prior to acceptance.  The profile indicates any special handling requirements which may be necessary during the shipment and disposal of these wastes at the landfill.  Certain wastes require laboratory testing to ensure the waste is acceptable for disposal under Superior Landfill and Recycling Center’s waste acceptance plan.

Superior Landfill and Recycling Center has maintained a long, mutually beneficial relationship with local and regional communities with the goal of providing a safe, economic and environmentally acceptable means of disposal into the future.
