Landfill Gas to Energy
Did you know that the Superior Landfill and Recycling Center is a renewable energy resource? Through its partnership with Georgia Power, the Superior Landfill and Recycling Center uses the methane gas typically generated from the decomposition of waste, to provide a renewable energy resource for the Savannah, Georgia area. This makes the Superior Landfill and Recycling Center the 4th landfill-gas-to-energy project in the State of Georgia.
So how is a landfill turned into a renewable energy resource? There is a landfill gas-to-energy plant on the actual property bordering the landfilling area, which provides enough power to provide energy to the equivalent of 1,600 homes each year – or 6.4 megawatts.
As a comparison, one megawatt of energy is enough to power an entire Super Target store for one year! If the methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, was not captured and reused, it would be vented and flared - - wasting this renewable resource.
